Relhan Collection : 43 Bourn. View of village, looking NE

Relhan, Richard, 1782-1844

Relhan Collection

1819

The view is taken from Alms Hill near Brook Farm, with Bourn church in the background. Bourn Brook runs across the middle of the drawing and under the Great Bridge. Land naturally rises on both sides of the Brook, and it looks as if ground has been cut as well as worn away, to provide safer passage for carts and cattle. This man-made cutting is shown on the 1886 OS Map. Land to the left is unusually well-wooded for the time, perhaps because Manor Farm, which dates to the C13, was owned by Christ’s College. The Great Bridge was rebuilt in 1853 and again in 1952. Behind the trees on the right is now the car park for Bourn Health Centre.

Owen S pers comm
