Relhan Collection : 44 Bourn. A more distant view of the village, looking NE

Relhan, Richard, 1782-1844

Relhan Collection

A view of Bourn, probably drawn from near the top of Alms Hill, giving a good view of open fields, farmed in the medieval way until Enclosure in 1820, shortly after this drawing was made. Perhaps because they are close to the settlement the balks are unusually tree-covered, and a cow is grazing in a field. In 2019 the fields are pasture, with visible traces of the ridge and furrow ploughing system surviving. A small white windmill can be seen on the left of the drawing – this ‘second’ Bourn windmill, dating from at least the C18, is marked by Mill Barn, which burnt down in C20. The better known Bourn windmill still stands on the W edge of the village near Caxton.

Owen S pers comm
