Relhan, Richard, 1782-1844

Relhan Collection

The arms were devised for Robert Cooke, Clarenceux King of Arms in 1573 while William Cecil, Lord Burghley, was Chancellor1573. They are described as ‘Gules, on a cross-ermine between 4 lions passant guardant Or, a Bible lying fesseways of the field, clasped and garnished of the third, the clasps in base’. The arms used in 2019 are the same as the ones that Relhan records. The lions represent the University's royal patronage, the ermine dignity, and the Bible on the cross both knowledge and the Christian faith.

Humphrey-Smith et al 1985 The Cambridge Armorial
