Relhan Collection : 71 Cambridge. View of Cambridge Castle c. 1540

Relhan, Richard, 1782-1844

Relhan Collection

Copied from Grose

The etching from which this is copied includes a ground plan and at B ‘The Julliet [tall round tower], (supposed to have been built by William I.)’. The original cannot be found in Grose 1772, and is quite unlike the more careful etchings he published. The small gatehouse in the front of the drawing is (70) above. The caption states it was originally drawn c.1540, in which case it could be the last view before Mary I gave stone from the Castle to build the new Sawston Hall (283a). This rare view shows the stone walls and towers built by Edward I.
