Relhan Collection : 73 Cambridge. Castle gatehouse from the road

Relhan, Richard, 1782-1844

Relhan Collection

1801

This last standing building associated with the Castle, in later times used as a prison, was demolished 1842 to make way for a new Shire House, which was itself demolished 1954. Relhan depicts a tidier view than other versions, partly because it was drawn earlier when the gatehouse was not so dilapidated, but probably too there is artistic licence. It was possibly drawn by another hand. The details however agree well with other drawings in this collection and other depictions.
