Relhan Collection : 74 Cambridge. Castle with spire of St Peter’s church

Relhan, Richard, 1782-1844

Relhan Collection

1800

This is probably the most realistic view of the Castle after it had lost most of its functions, with grazing horse and rabbits and an air of dereliction. It is taken from somewhere near the present (2020) Shire Hall. The castle mound is now a popular viewpoint over Cambridge, the Gatehouse stood near the site of the square building just beyond the parked cars, and St Peter’s is virtually obscured by buildings and trees but in winter the top of the spire is just visible above buildings between the castle and the site of the Gatehouse.
