76a Cambridge. Supposed plan of Dr Stukeley’s (Roman) ‘Granta’

Sketch by an unknown hand

This plan of Roman Cambridge has roughly the right location but is otherwise not helpful. The School of Pythagoras is in the grounds of St John’s College, the ‘supposed site of Mr Ketil’s house’ now includes the house and art gallery of Kettles Yard, St Giles church was rebuilt in 1875 and the Courts of Assize were demolished. Stukeley’s Itinerarium Curiosum does not include Cambridge, and this crude sketch is quite unlike his published etchings.

76b Cambridge. Supposed plan of the same, after its conversion into a Danish camp

Sketch by an unknown hand

Cambridge was a Danish town from 875, when the Great Army settled here, until 921 when it was taken by Edward the Elder as part of the re-conquest of the Danelaw. However, its value was for international river trade and the most likely area for settlement was around St Clement’s church and the river crossing near the present Magdalene Bridge. The source of this sketch is unknown.
