Relhan Collection : 78 Cambridge. Arms of Sir Isaac Pennington, Kt

Relhan, Richard, 1782-1844

Relhan Collection

c.1817-19

The location of these arms is not known. Relhan captions this ‘Coat Armour of the Late Sir Isaac Pennington Knight’ and it would seem likely it was drawn soon after his death. Sir Isaac Pennington (1745-1817) was the son of a Lancashire sea merchant, who entered St John’s College 1762, becoming a Lupton Scholar, 13th wrangler in 1767, succeeding one of his examiners as professor of chemistry. He became a fellow of St John’s, president 1778-1802, regius professor of physic 1793-1813. He was knighted in 1796, died in Cambridge 1817 and is memorialised in St John’s College Chapel. The depiction is similar in quality to that of the Hardwicke arms (2) of 1819.

Saunders P pers comm
