<p style='text-align: justify;'><p>Relhan transcribes the inscription and verse epitaph that he describes as ‘<i>on the Ancient Hatchment in the South Aisle of St Michael’s church: </i>‘Prope jacet Eduardus, Radulphi Dod de Shockledge, Comitatu Cestriensi Generosi, quondam Collegii Caio-Gonvilensis per triennium Alumnus, optime Spei Juvenis, qui vitam Mortalem cum immortali commutavit 26 Sept. 1636, aet. 19.</p><p>Caste Puer, flammis sic saevis urere? vincor</p><p>Ut credam, tostas febre fuisse Nives, </p><p>Flamma digne puer meiliore, Itu quoque sursum</p><p>Syderibus mistus, jam novus Ignis eris.</p><p>Edward Dod, of Shocklach (Cheshire), from a significant Cheshire gentry family, was admitted a sizar to Gonville and Caius in 1634 but died in college of the plague little more than two years’ later, and was buried in St Michael’s, where the N aisle had served as Gonville and Caius chapel. The arms are of Dod quartering Edge and Wollaston with a crescent for difference. The wooden panel was recorded by RCHME, when it was noted as much damaged and is no longer be found.</p><p>Translation: Nearby lies Edward Ralph Dod of Shockledge, a gentleman of Chester County, former alumnus of the College of Caius-Gonville for three years, an excellent young man of Hope, who changed his life from mortal to immortal. 1636, aged 19.</p><p>RCHME 1959; Saunders P pers comm; Venn</p></p>
