Signed ‘Sidney, 1812’

Relhan (or ‘Sidney’) has copied a picture of a similar style to one in the Burrell Collection labelled ‘portrait of a girl aged one with a basket of strawberries’ 1622, and described ‘Dutch School, C17’. Was this a standard portrait for children of either sex in Holland at this time, with copies still made in later times? This picture was probably part of the original Fitzwilliam bequest, one of the 60-80 mainly Dutch or Flemish paintings that Richard Fitzwilliam had inherited, but were later disposed of, presumably being not of a suitable artistic standard.

Burn L 2016; Elenor Ling (Fitzwilliam Museum) pers comm
