Relhan Collection : 119 Chesterton Tower. Interior view, showing groined roof

Relhan, Richard, 1782-1844

Relhan Collection

The roof of the ground floor room still (2020) appears much as Relhan drew it (although one boss has changed orientation), with its original stone vault. The elaborate arrangement of ribs is decorated with carved bosses depicting men’s faces (variously foliated, hooded, bearded and grotesque), a lion’s mask and flowers, at its intersections. The roof of the upper floor has been replaced. Foster 1909 contains useful illustrations of the building, including an interior.

Foster 1909; RCHME 1959
