Coton was a hamlet of Grantchester and St Peter’s counted as a chapel without rights of burial until 1384. Nevertheless it has a Norman chancel, early C14 S aisle and doorway and a tower with graffiti, ‘Andrew Swynow … built this arch on St Wulstan’s day1481’. Alterations and refenestration in the C15 are shown in Relhan’s drawing. The Diocesan Visitation Book complains of the state of the chancel, where rubbish has collected, the roof needed re-thatching and walls re-plastering. Restorations in 1863 under WM Fawcett were followed by a full restoration of the chancel by C Hodgson Fowler 1878-80 when windows of the Norman church were uncovered and reset, one in S chancel wall. The spire was rebuilt in the 1890s and the tower and spire again repaired c.1925. The churchyard has been much enlarged on S side, taking in Relhan’s field with cows, and it contains many gravestones.

Davis EM pers comm; RCHME 1968; VCH 1973
