These 7 drawings were made together on the 2 sheets, neither of which is dated, the 2nd closely underneath that of the 1st on one sheet and the remainder on another. The quality of the armorial devices led Relhan to draw them in detail – see 140a.

Andrew Downes (1549–1627), educated at school in Shrewsbury then St John's College Cambridge from 1567, was a distinguished Regius Professor of Greek for 39 years, reputedly ‘the ablest Grecian in Christendom’, and was involved in translating the Apocrypha for the King James’ Bible. He quit his fellowship at St John’s when he married Anna Devells sometime before 1618 but retained his professorship until shortly before his death, 1627. They moved to Coton when he was 77. The wall monument is painted on clunch with a polished slate inscription panel and, having been restored by HJ Jarvis in 1968, is in good condition.
