Relhan Collection : 175 Haslingfield church. Inscription on monument of Thomas and Elizabeth Wendy

Relhan, Richard, 1782-1844

Relhan Collection

The inscription, which appears not to be in Relhan’s hand, gives a useful genealogy for the extended Wendy family. It was erected by Sir William Wendy, Thomas’s son in 1619. Thomas was the son of Dr Wendy’s elder brother John Wendy of Clare, Suffolk. He studied at Christ’s College, was sheriff of Cambs and Hunts 1573, 1585 and 1602, and entered the Inns of Court. He was a Puritan who gave stone from Barnwell Priory (14), which Dr Wendy had acquired, to build Corpus Christi College chapel in 1578, and provided funds and timber to the new Puritan college of Emmanuel. His wife Elizabeth was Dr Wendy’s step-daughter.

Davis 1968; Venn
