Robert Masters (1713-1798) was Fellow, tutor and historian of Corpus Christi College (in which capacity he researched and recorded Landbeach extensively), was Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and published many papers, eg in Archaeologia and Proc Cambridge Antiquarian Society. As rector of Landbeach from 1756 he began modernisation of the Rectory. At a great age he resigned the living of Landbeach in favour of Thomas Cooke Burroughes, senior fellow of Caius College, who promptly married Mary, Masters' daughter, and they all lived together until Revd Masters died the following year. He is buried and memorialised in the church, where he had taken ‘much glass, woodwork etc into the church’ (Evelyn-White). His son-in-law Thomas Burroughs further modernised the Rectory, turned the cow yard into a pleasure garden, planted exotic trees and fruits and created walks and lawn. The coats of arms of Masters were included in the reconstructed E window (2 of lions rampant with red rose, one impaled with chevrons and 3 eagles), along with quarries of the de Beches family that were taken from the parlour windows of the rectory by Robert Masters in 1750, and late C19 work. The only memorial recognised by Bell was a tablet in the pavement recording Masters as rector of Landbeach for 23 years, dying 1821 age 64.

Bell 2013; Evelyn-White 1911; Ravensdale 1974; VCH 1989
