1800

St Michael’s contains evidence of a C12 church in reused stonework but otherwise the church, with thatched roofs sweeping over the aisles, is C13, with square-headed windows of the C14. C13 details include a double piscina. The C15 porches are thatched now, but Relhan’s view only shows the roof of the N porch, which is tiled. The W wall was rebuilt perhaps after a collapse of the C15 tower and the bells transferred into a bell cote. The bells were stolen 1969. The chancel was rebuilt in the C19 and used as a schoolroom, screened from the nave by a curtain, with a fireplace, later a wall stove, and chimney. The chancel was again rebuilt in 1884 and the nave and aisles were restored 1889. Churches founded in America were recommended by the Cambridge Camden Society to follow the design of this appealing church. It is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

Davis EM pers comm; VCH 1989
