Relhan Collection : 274 Quy church. Hatchment of the Martin family

Relhan, Richard, 1782-1844

Relhan Collection

The brothers Thomas and James Martin, both bankers, acquired the Quy estate 1722. Both were childless so the estate descended through their nephew John, d. 1794, his nephew Thomas, d. 1821, and his son James Thomas, who greatly expanded the estate, perhaps too recklessly, and eventually had to sell everything to his solicitor, Cambridge-based Clement Francis (267), in 1855. The hatchment, on canvas, still hangs high in the N aisle.

RCHME 1972; VCH 2002
