Relhan, Richard, 1782-1844
Relhan Collection

1819

The shield of arms labelled ‘Arms of the Lisle Family’. First paragraph headed ‘The Manor of Rampton 7 Miles from Cambridge’ and is followed by a longer description of monument (277-278), its colouring and the family’s connection with Rampton including the adjacent castle (Giant’s Hill). ‘his supposed residence is a little to the E of the church where to this day are to be seen foundations of a building and a mound surrounded by a large moat. The monument appears to be about the time of Henry III by the costume’. The arms and crest are blazoned. Cole 1744 had ‘ye whitening and other dirt washed and scraped of ye shield....when ye arms of Lisle appeared as fresh as if painted but yesterday’. Relhan also here describes the arms on the shield of the effigy, but by Bell’s time ‘the sculpture is defaced and no bearings are decipherable on the shield’ (1883). Cole also records glass in E window which includes a lily (for Lisle?) between 2 bells. This does not survive.
