Relhan Collection : 298 Swaffham Prior. Entrance to Swaffham Prior from Burwell

Relhan, Richard, 1782-1844

Relhan Collection

1827

The view is apparently taken from the gap in Devils Dyke on the B1102, still in use for traffic from Burwell to Swaffham Prior. The Dyke had trees and other vegetation on its slopes and grass along the summit, just a bit less overgrown than today (2020). The farmland is arable, also as today but in strip fields, with ridge and furrow from the original fields still discernible. The two churches (297) are prominent features, but it is now impossible to see them from Devils Dyke, mostly due to tree cover.
