Relhan, Richard, 1782-1844

Relhan Collection

The medieval Swavesey manor house, just E of church in Station Road, was purchased by the 4th Sir John Cutts and his son, 5th Sir John Cutts 'built a very pretty retyring house there' according to Cole. Cutts extended the 2 wings eastwards, rebuilt the hall range that joined them and added a gallery to the S wing. The staircase shown here, with its turned balusters, carved finials and a rail following the rake of the stair, is preserved, as are fireplaces with carved panels and painted panels, overmantels and panelling dating to this phase. In 1718 the house was sold by Lord John Cutts’ brother-in-law to Thomas Sclater Bacon.

Palmer 1932; VCH 1989
