Relhan Collection : 332 Great Wilbraham. Revd. James Hicks

Relhan, Richard, 1782-1844

Relhan Collection

Labelled underneath ‘The Armorial Bearings of the Revd Mr Hicks of Wilbraham’. Benton added: ‘’The Rev. James Hicks, M A purchased the Temple Estates of the ‘Ward’ family in 1788 and died in 1824, aet. 72. There is a monument to his memory in the chancel.’ James Hicks purchased rights to the church in 1788, and his family is well represented in memorials on the walls of the chancel. The text of his wall memorial is carved on a white marble tablet with classical pillasters and design, on a black mount. The heraldic device is still in place, with his quartered heraldic device surmounted by a stag with coronet as Relhan depicts, but without colour. Unfortunately it is too high up to see clearly.

Stokes 1926; VCH 2002
