Cavendish Laboratory : Letter from Blore to Maxwell 1871

Cavendish Laboratory

Initially the electors to the Professorship considered Sir William Thomson and Hermann von Helmholtz, but they were not available. Maxwell was ideally matched to the requirements of the Professorship. In 1871, Rayleigh wrote to Maxwell, explaining how Maxwell was ideal for the position. The same sentiments are expressed in this letter from Blore to Maxwell. (Longair, 2016, pp. 49-50). This photograph of the manuscript was probably taken on the occasion of the Maxwell Centenary Celebration in 1931.
