Cavendish Laboratory : Maxwell's zoetrope (1861)

Cavendish Laboratory

Photograph of Maxwell's zoetrope of 1861. Maxwell had a lifelong fascination with the zoetrope which enabled moving images to be created. He and his cousin Jemima Wedderburn drew zoetrope strips for entertainment and scientific illustration. A clown strip is visible inside the zoetrope. Maxwell replaced the zoetrope slits with convex lenses which focussed the images on the axis of the zoetrope and provided a wide field of view. He then set this arrangement as a problem in the 1869 Mathematical Tripos examination.
