<p style='text-align: justify;'>Photograph of the unmounted receiver beside Rutherford's main apparatus. When Rutherford arrived in Cambridge from New Zealand in 1895, his first project involved the construction of a magnetic radio transmitter and receiver. He had begun this work as a student at the University of Christchurch, New Zealand. For a few weeks, he held the world distance record for radio communication between the Observatories and the centre of Cambridge.</p>
