Cavendish Laboratory : Cloud chamber tracks by P.I. Dee

Cavendish Laboratory

In 1933 Philip I. Dee took cloud chamber photographs of the artificial disintegration of lithium by fast protons. He used Oliphant's accelerator in combination with a Wilson cloud chamber to confirm the nature of this process. (https://doi.org/10.1098/rspa.1933.0151) Two pairs of alpha-particles move in opposite directions with range 8.4 cm. The black tube through which protons were inserted (right) and the grid supporting the target (middle), as well as its reflection from the chamber floor (white patch on the left) can also be seen.
