Cavendish Laboratory : Jackson X-ray tube made for JJ Thomson
Cavendish Laboratory

This type of discharge tube invented by Sir Herbert Jackson of King's College London in 1896 was the most efficient source of X-ray production at that time. This example was constructed by J.J. Thomson's personal assistant, E. Everett. He and W.H. Hayles took X-ray photographs of patients brought by doctors to the Cavendish Laboratory. At the same time, Thomson was investigating the nature of X-rays and their influence on the conductivity of gases.
