Cavendish Laboratory : Apparatus for measuring the charge carried by alpha-particles by Rutherford and Geiger (1908)

Cavendish Laboratory

Photograph of Rutherford and Geiger's apparatus of 1908 for measuring the charge carried by alpha-particles. See: Rutherford and Geiger, Proc. Roy. Soc., A81, 162, 1908. Rutherford and Geiger measured the total charge of a flux of alpha-particles using this apparatus. The radium sample was contained within the vessel and the alpha-particles collected on the plate. Knowing the rate of emission of alpha-particles, the charge of the alpha-particle could be estimated.
