Cavendish Laboratory : JJ Thomson and Aston's photographic positive ray tube
Cavendish Laboratory

Black and white photograph of Thomson and Aston's photographic positive ray tube set up in the laboratory. The research programme was carried out in 1911-1912 jointly by Thomson and Aston. The positive ray tube is similar to the cathode ray tube, but the positive rays pass through holes in the cathode and are then deflected by parallel electric and magnetic fields at right angles to the beam, resulting in the parabolae seen on the photographic plates (see P48 and P49) .
