Cavendish Laboratory : Cockcroft and Walton's first high voltage machine

Cavendish Laboratory

In 1932 John Cockcroft and Ernest Walton succeeded in constructing a high voltage proton accelerator, capable of producing protons with energy up to 710 kV thanks to the new high voltage multiplying circuit. This was the machine used to demonstrate the artificial disintegration of lithium. They were awarded the 1951 Nobel Prize in Physics for this work.
