<p style='text-align: justify;'>This agreement was signed by both J.J. Thomson and E. Rutherford to ensure the separation between the Cavendish chair and the new professorship created for Thomson. Being independent from his predecessor was one of the concerns which held Rutherford back from accepting the appointment as the fourth Cavendish Professor, which he eventually did in 1919.</p>
