In 1895 the University allowed non-Cambridge graduates to obtain the BA degree by research in two years. Rutherford was one of the very first to take up this opportunity supported by a studentship of the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851. This letter from Thomson gives Rutherford permission to work in the Cavendish Laboratory and invites him for an interview.
