Cavendish Laboratory : Letter from Maxwell to Tait on Maxwell's demon, 11 December 1867

Cavendish Laboratory

The word 'demon' is not used by Maxwell. It first appeared in William Thomson's, 'The kinetic theory of the dissipation of energy', Nature, 9 (1874): 441-4. The book on Quaternions referred to on the last page is 'An Elementary Treatise on Quaternions' by P.G. Tait (Oxford 1867). For more details see: P.M. Harman, 'The scientific letters and papers of James Clerk Maxwell', Vol.II, CUP 1995, pp.331-333. This photograph of the manuscript was probably taken on the occasion of the Maxwell Centenary Celebration in 1931.
