Cavendish Laboratory : Maxwell's poem 'To The Committee of the Cayley Portrait Fund', c.1875

Cavendish Laboratory

Arthur Cayley was elected the first Sadleirian Professor of Pure Mathematics in 1863. In 1875 he became a Fellow of Trinity College, on which occasion his friends subscribed to a presentation portrait. In his poem addressed to the committee of subscribers, Maxwell mentions the main subjects of Cayley's research, which include geometry of n dimensions, determinants, and skew surfaces (otherwise known as scrolls). This photograph of the manuscript was probably taken on the occasion of the Maxwell Centenary Celebration in 1931.
