Cavendish Laboratory : Letter from Maxwell to W. Thomson (Lord Kelvin) describing experiments on the viscosity of gases, 17-18.4.1865

Cavendish Laboratory

In 1862 Thomson outlined an experiment on the viscosity of liquids, which was the reason for his interest in Maxwell's experiments described in this letter. The final results of this work were published in Phil. Trans., 156 (1866): 249-68. One of the conclusions mentioned in the letter is that dynamic visosity (here denoted as μ) is independent of gas density at constant temperature. For more details see: P.M. Harman, 'The scientific letters and papers of James Clerk Maxwell', Vol.II, CUP 1995, p.218. This photograph of the manuscript was probably taken on the occasion of the Maxwell Centenary Celebration in 1931.
