Cavendish Laboratory : Diagram of Rutherford and Robinson's apparatus for measuring e/m for alpha particles
Cavendish Laboratory

In 1914 Rutherford and Robinson measured the deflection of a beam of alpha-particles in an electric field. A potential difference of 2000 V was maintained between the long plates and the deflected trajectories were measured on the photographic plate. The apparatus had to be much longer than an electron tube because the much greater mass of the alpha particles resulted in a much smaller deflection. For details see: Rutherford and Robinson, Phil. Mag. (6). 28, 552, 1914.
