This was one of the larger laboratories into which the Cavendish expanded when the Engineering Department moved to its new building in Trumpington Road. It housed many experiments and some important equipment, such as the annular magnet and the ionization chamber with a scale-of-two counter. The latter instrument was microphonically sensitive which resulted in the famous illuminated 'Talk Softly Please' sign seen in this photograph. Snapshot by C.E. Wynn-Williams.
