Cavendish Laboratory : Bennett glassblowing in a practical class

Cavendish Laboratory

Glassblowing was an important skill for all experimental physicists at the Cavendish, as they had to construct all their apparatus theselves with very little money for materials. For a long time this skill was taught to research students by James Chadwick. A summer course was held in the attic of the 1896 Laboratory extension which was referred to as the 'Nursery'. The photograph shows Bennett. Photo by J.H. Fremlin
