Cavendish Laboratory : Laying the foundation stone of the Austin wing
Cavendish Laboratory

The construction of the Austin Wing started in May 1938, thanks to the gift of £250,000 from Sir Herbert Austin, founder of the Austin Motor Company. When the construction was well under way, Bragg was embarrassed to receive a letter from Austin asking when he could lay the foundation stone. The principal architect, Charles Holden, suggested that as the foundations were already laid, the foundation stone could be built into a wall flanking the entrance steps. The ceremony was held on the 6th May 1939. One year later the building was completed. Photo by Miss A.M. Lawrence.
