Mrs. Horton demonstrating to A.B. Pippard in a Part II practical class. Mrs. Horton (then Miss Ann Davies) was the first woman to hold a university appointment in physics in Cambridge. At the end of the academic year 1940–41, Brian Pippard graduated with first-class honours in Part II of the Natural Science Tripos. Here he is being instructed by Mrs. Horton in a Part II practical class in the top floor of the Maxwell Wing. Pippard succeeded Mott as Cavendish Professor in 1971.
