As an undergraduate at Cambridge, Cockcroft read mathematics and embarked upon his PhD in 1924. He was an excellent organiser. The Cockcroft and Walton experiment demonstrated the validity of Einstein's relation E = mc² and the production of energy by nuclear fission.</p>
