Cavendish Laboratory : Kapitsa's generator (1933)

Cavendish Laboratory

Black and white copy of a photograph of the generator used for producing intense currents and very high magnetic fields in the Mond Laboratory. Kapitsa generated huge currents within the generator and then suddenly switch them off, producing short lived magnetic fields of very great intensity. Laurmann was allowed to come to the UK from Moscow as Kapitsa'a assistant and is probably the person seen in the photograph. The generator was given to Kapitsa by the Manchester tram company when they had no further use for it.
