Cavendish Laboratory : Portrait of Marcus Oliphant

Cavendish Laboratory

<p style='text-align: justify;'>Sir Marcus Oliphant, born in Australia, started work at the Cavendish in 1927, inspired by one of Rutherford's lectures. He designed a simplified and more powerful version of the Cockcroft-Walton accelerator. He became a leader of nuclear physics research and played a key role in the development of nuclear energy and nuclear weapons. After the war, Oliphant returned to Australia as the first director of the Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering at the new Australian National University (ANU).
