Cavendish Laboratory : Portrait of William Garnett

Cavendish Laboratory

William Garnett was the first demonstrator at the Laboratory. Maxwell selected him personally for the role, having been impressed with his perfomance in the Mathematical Tripos. He gave elementary lectures in physics to medical students and provided support in the experimental physics laboratories. In 1880 Glazebrook and Shaw succeeded him as demonstrators (J.J. Thomson, Recollections and Reflections, Bell and Sons, 1936). Photo by Lafayette.
