Cavendish Laboratory

Sir Alan Herries Wilson was a theoretical physicist who carried out pioneering research in the quantum theory of semiconductors under the supervision of Fowler during his time in Cambridge. During the period 1931–1932 he formulated a theory explaining how energy bands of electrons can make a material a conductor, a semiconductor, or an insulator. He was awarded the 1932 Adams Prize for this work.
