Cavendish Laboratory : Kempton at the controls of the cyclotron

Cavendish Laboratory

Black and white photograph of Albert Kempton at the controls of the cyclotron. The department invested in a cyclotron as part of the gift of Lord Austin. The particles are bent in a circle by a strong uniform magnetic field. Their energies increased each time they passed over the accelerating gap between the two Ds (see P524). The cyclotron could accelerate deuterons to about 10 MeV.
