Cavendish Laboratory : 1MV machine under construction

Cavendish Laboratory

Fred Lincoln was a friend of Bauhaus boat builders and they made the cover for the accelerating tube seen in the photograph. Oliphant is underneath the cover and an assistant to the right of the photograph. Unlike the original Cockcroft and Walton accelerator, the 1 and 2 MeV machines were bought commercially from the Phillips Company. The High Tension Laboratory was built in 1937 on a site adjacent to the Austin Wing. Eventually it was converted into the Cockcroft lecture theatre with practical laboratories on the two upper floors.
