Cavendish Laboratory : The 2 MV machine in the High Tension Laboratory (1938)

Cavendish Laboratory

Black and white photograph of a view of the 2 MV machine taken from beside the accelerating tube of the 1 MV machine. Unlike the original Cockcroft and Walton accelerator, the 1 and 2 MeV machines were bought commercially from the Phillips Company. The High Tension Laboratory was built in 1937 on a site adjacent to the Austin Wing. Eventually it was converted into the Cockcroft lecture theatre with practical laboratories on two floors above.
