<p style='text-align: justify;'>Black and white photograph of the bottom half of the cyclotron, viewed from above and showing the 'Ds'. In a cyclotron, the particles are bent in a circle by a strong uniform magnetic field. Their energies are increased each time they pass over the accelerating gap between the two Ds which is seen in this image. The cyclotron could accelerate deuterons to about 10 MeV.</p>
