As the space at the rifle range behind the University Rugby Ground in Grange Road was too small for the next-generation radio interferometers, the radio observatory moved to a disused wartime Air Ministry bomb store at Lord's Bridge in 1956, about 10 km to the south-west of Cambridge. This new site had the advantage that it was much better suited for radio astronomy because of the lower level of man-made radio interference (Longair, 2016, p. 339)
