Cavendish Laboratory : Liquid helium fountain

Cavendish Laboratory

Black and white photograph of the fountain effect in liquid helium. When superfluid helium is heated on one side of a porous medium or thin capillary, the pressure increases sufficiently to produce a little fountain at the end of the tube, the 'fountain effect'. This experiment was carried out by Allen and Misener and was part of their discovery of the phenomenon of superfluidity.
